Polly Apfelbaum Exhibition

Forms In Context — Hybrid Museum
Project Overview
Create a temporary (3–4 week) exhibition featuring an artist (or issue*) currently on exhibit at one of the three museums. The client wants at least one piece of the artist’s work to be on display, but they also want to use digital technology to enhance the visitor’s experience in ways they are not currently doing. Consider how technology can augment content, increase learning and/or make the museum experience more interactive.

My Contributions
I began by immersing myself in Polly Apfelbaum’s work—her use of color, texture, and installation—to understand her ethos of blending discipline with spontaneity. This inspired me to center the exhibition on the often-unseen process of “making.” In designing the space, I combined physical layout decisions with digital enhancements, incorporating interactive screens and AR to reveal sketches, material explorations, and time-lapse videos. My goal was to use technology not as a replacement, but as a bridge to deepen engagement with her art.
This project was transformative in several ways. It reinforced the importance of research and storytelling in design—how every choice, from layout to interactivity, contributes to the narrative. It also deepened my understanding of how digital technology can enhance art appreciation when used thoughtfully. On a personal level, I grew more confident in my ability to navigate complex projects and work across disciplines. The project pushed me to think critically, adapt quickly, and maintain a balance between creative vision and practical constraints. It also solidified my passion for designing experiences that blend art, technology, and audience engagement.

Looking forward, I aim to apply the insights gained from this project to future endeavors. Whether designing exhibitions, interactive installations, or other user-centered experiences, I am committed to creating work that bridges gaps between disciplines and fosters deeper connections between audiences and content.Overall, this project was not just about showcasing Polly Apfelbaum’s work but also about expanding my horizons as a designer. It was a celebration of process, creativity, and the transformative power of art—for both the artist and the audience.
